The Polymer Composites Technology Program - taking your business further, for free!

Picture The Polymer Composites Technology Program is a series of modules developed by leaders in the composites industry, for the composites industry. All modules will enable candidates to work efficiently to a high standard in the application trained for, and opens up for innovation by teaching the latest and most cost effective processes in the industry.

Topics in the modules have been developed to provide a comprehensive programme of subjects relevant to the activities of technicians, engineers and leading process operatives working within the Polymer Composites Industry. The programme comprises a range of stand alone individual learning modules, where the learning will be assessed and accreditation awarded. Consequently the programme can be used as a simple up-skilling initiative for employees and/or as part of a full industry standard of performance.

The technical subject matter experts developing the programme, have had extensive industrial experience in numerous industry sectors utilising polymer composites and are conducting training and development programmes to the industry currently in this discipline.

Each module is designed to provide more in-depth and analytical knowledge and skill, to enable candidates to question and analyse why:-

  • materials are behaving in a certain way
  • faults are occurring and how to remedy the situation
  • a particular process is being used and can it be improved upon
  • the process technology used in aerospace can/cannot be applied to other sectors
  • a certain design feature has been chosen over a less complex feature
  • process operations deviate from standard operating procedures
  • As more opportunities and applications arise for polymer composites, it is critical that key employees develop their knowledge and skill beyond their current levels to assist their employer move quickly into development and delivery. As a result the candidate will benefit from extensive hands on and practical development, together with the necessary underpinning knowledge in order to apply learning within the workplace immediately.

    The Learning Modules

    Module 1 - Composite Materials & Processes

The module provides an overview of the industry and examines the range of existing & recently developed materials, together with the variety of processing techniques being employed to construct composite products and component parts. The duration of the module is 5 days.

  • Composite materials - selection, properties & behaviour
  • Wet lay-up processing
  • Resin Infusion systems
  • Pre-preg laminating & material preparation
  • Automated composite processing methods
  • Vacuum bagging techniques and procedures
  • Tooling care & preparation
  • Release & adhesion systems
  • Trimming & finishing techniques
  • Quality & inspection - faults analysis and cause identification

  • Module 2 - Composite Manufacturing & Processes

The module provides an in-depth practical examination of the various processing techniques and compares the benefits and disadvantages of each process technology. The module has a duration of 30 days in total, broken down into six sub-modules of 5 day duration each. Sub-modules may be taken as independent stand alone units.

  • Sub-module 2a) - Wet & Spray Lay-up
  • Sub-module 2b) - Resin infusion
  • Sub-module 2c) - Pre-preg part 1
  • Sub-module 2d) - Pre-preg part 2
  • Sub-module 2e) - Automated Processes
  • Sub-module 2f) - Trimming, Finishing & Assembly

  • Module 3 - Product & Tooling Design for Manufacture

The module examines through practical exercises the criteria for the design of the product and associated tooling. Investigation into the materials selected for a given application and the appropriate selection of process technology. The module has a 5 day duration.

  • Design of fibre matrices
  • Material selection for given applications
  • Design and modelling techniques
  • Surface & predictive modelling techniques
  • Process selection for application and volume requirements
  • Drawing and SOP development and interpretation
  • Tool construction, repair and remedial actions
  • Release and cleaning agents

  • Module 4 - Composite Repair & Refurbishment

The module examines through practical applications the techniques employed for repair and refurbishment of composite products and component parts prior to delivery to customer and in-field failures, low performance or preventative maintenance. This module has a 5 day duration.

  • Systematic identification of faults and potential failures
  • Identification of causes
  • Selection of repair methods and solutions for given applications
  • Practical "permanent repair" exercises
  • Practical "temporary repair" exercises
  • Selection of and exercises in testing of repairs

  • Module 5 - Quality, Inspection & Testing

The module investigates and examines through practical exercises and demonstrations, the various testing and quality assurance techniques used within the industry for both the materials and the product or component part. This module has a 5 day duration

  • Tensile, flexural, compressive, shear and impact strengths and modulus
  • Impact of weathering & exposure to sunlight
  • On & off-line quality monitoring techniques
  • Fault identification, analysis, cause, effect and remedial actions
  • National, European and International standards and systems

  • The selection of inspection, testing and quality standards for given applications

  • Module 6 - Recycling and Disposal of Composite Materials

With today's ever increasing use of composites and the regulation associated with the disposal of end of life a product and impact upon the environment, this module is designed to help address some of these issues.

  • The latest thinking on composite disposal
  • Recycling reinforcement and matrix systems
  • Reducing energy input into the various processes
  • Biodegradable reinforcements and matrices
